The Red-Scaled Gyrados screams as one last laser beam hit him in the eyes. Its towering figure falls backwards and lands flat upon the surface of the raging waters of the lake, causing torrents of water to ripple outward towards the land surrounding. AJ clings on to his Feraligator's back scales for his life as the waves wash over him, any cry he might have made being drowned by the crashing of the waves upon him.
The people gathered around the lake to watch gasp and cheer as the beast sinks into the depths of the lake. Lance stood near the entry sign and watches silently. The people around him start speaking of the wonderful effort made by the boy trainer on his Feraligator. The waves from the splash reach the shore; they rush up and lap people's heels. Lance's long black cape is moistened, but he pays no mind.
The boy, soaked, rides across the lake on his pokemon to the shore, coughing and hacking. People start approaching him to congratulate him, almost rushing him. Lance, however, swishes his cape and calls out to them.
Lance: "Let the boy be. Let him regain his strength and composure."
Lance approaches the boy as the crowd parts slightly to let him through. But he stops for a moment, and clutches his chest. He looks down for a moment at his hand close to his chest, before putting something away into his vest pocket again.
AJ coughs loudly and gets up. He begins wringing out his clothing.
Lance: approaching "Are you... AJ?"
AJ: coughing "...Yes? How do you---how do you know my name?"
Lance: extending a hand "I'm Lance, a trainer like you."
AJ extends a wet hand shook Lance's hand. Lance didn't let go immedeately.
Lance: mumbled "So you're the one the legends foretold..."
AJ: "Excuse me?"
Lance: brisk "I heard some rumors about the lake, so I came to investigate. It seems that the lake's Magikarp are being forced to evolve. A mysterious radio broadcast coming from Mahogany is causing it."
Lance smiles at AJ, or rather, at a point slightly above AJ's head.
Lance: "I saw the way you battled earlier, AJ. I can tell that you're a trainer with considerable skill."
AJ cocks his head to the side as he watches Lance's gaze climb higher above AJ's head. AJ looks up and sees the Unown, ever present, buzzing about their regret at not catching the Red Gyrados as well as the usual persistent commands to release LazorGator. Everyone he's spoken to thus far has ignored the Unown, as if they weren't really there. Could Lance see them?
AJ is pulled out of his thoughts by Lance placing his hand gently on his shoulder.
Lance: "If you don't mind, could you help me investigate?"
AJ: "No. Not right now at least. Do you see how wet I am?"
Lance: "Oh, well, if you change your mind, please help me."
And Lance swiftly turns on his heel and begins walking away.
AJ: "Wait, I didn't mean--LazorGator, don't you dare!"
AJ returns LazorGator to his ball and rushes up to Lance.
Lance: Turning "Hm? Are you going to help me?"
AJ: "Well, sure! I just need to dry off first!"
Lance: "Excellent! I'll be waiting for you, AJ."
Lance pulls a small lump of amber from his vest pocket.
Lance: whisper "We don't want to let the Old One down after all..."
With that, Lance flew up into the air, seemingly carried by the small stone, and Dragonite appeared and took Lance off into the distance.
AJ looks after him, scratching his head.
AJ: "The hell?"
This is the 11th installment of Chronicles of AJ Downs. In which AJ finds himself deeper than he thought before.

I've got my own headcannon regarding how this whole fiasco works, but I quite like your interpretation. Very interesting! At least in this version, AJ doesn't seem to suffer all the physical effects of sleep deprivation and schizophrenia.
Guess I gotta read all your previous things then, eh?
